Anam 138

138- AND THEY SAID: “THESE CATTLE AND CROPS ARE KEPT TO EXCLUSIVELY FEED THOSE WE DESIRE, ACCORDING TO THEIR CLAIMS, AND CATTLE THEY FORBID THE USE OF THEIR BACKS, AND CATTLE THEY DO NOT INVOKE ALLAH’S NAME ON WHEN SLAUGHTERED, THIS IS INVENTING LIES CONCERNING ALLAH, WE WILL RECOMPENSE THEM FOR THEIR LIES.

The disbelievers then invented lies concerning Allah the Highest, and they still do one way or another.  These lies become recognized practices which become part of the social culture, mistaken for being part of the religion, and it would be practiced by both disbelievers and believers.  Allah the Highest mentioned some of these practices which He called invented lies, meaning that they have no basis at all.  Some of these practices are:

-         Certain animals are offered to God, while some are offered to Idles.

-         Some animals they forbad being ridden, while others can be ridden.

-         Some animals will have Allah’s name invoked on when slaughtered, while with other animals they do not.

They were all lies concerning Allah the Highest, for none of these Allah ordered or commanded as they claimed.

Unfortunately, very similar practices are done at present, in the Muslim, Christian and Jewish societies.  Some religious practices are invented and over the years they become thought of as one of the essential and integral parts of the religion.  In Muslim countries, some old social practices are considered part of the Islamic Religion, which they are not, and are often practiced by Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

We often see such practices in matters of marriage, divorce, inheritance, and even Salah.  Over the years, we forget about their origins, and they will be assumed to be religious practices.

While Islam is not against upholding good social traditions which do not contradict the Islamic teachings and principles, for Allah the Highest said: “TAKE FROM THEIR SURPLUS, COMMAND THE UPHOLDING OF GOOD TRADITIONS, AND TURN AWAY FROM THE IGNORANT”.  (S:7 A:199)
