16- THOSE WHO SAY: “OUR LORD WE BELIEVE, FORGIVE US AND SAVE US FROM THE TORTURE OF THE FIRE. 17- THOSE WHO ARE PATIENT AND PERSEVERE, THE TRUE, THE DEVOUT IN WORSHIP, THE CHARITABLE, AND THOSE WHO PRAY FOR FORGIVENESS IN THE SMALL HOURS OF THE MORNING. Allah the Highest is telling us about the characteristics of those who qualify for the entry of Paradise. These are important for us to know: 1- Belief. It is no good to do any good deed without the belief in Allah. Those who do not believe naturally do not expect any recognition or recompense for their work from Allah, for they do not believe in Him in the first place. Therefore, Believing in Allah the Highest is a basic requirement. 2- They ask Allah the Highest for Forgiveness. Allah the Highest promised not to punish those who repent and sincerely ask for forgiveness. “ALLAH WOULD NOT PUNISH THEM WHILE YOU ARE AMONG THEM, AND ALLAH WOULD NOT PUNISH THEM WHILE THEY ASK FOR FORGIVENESS” (S:8 A:33) Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him used to Ask for forgiveness every day a hundred times, he said: “Allah’s slaves, repent and ask Allah for forgiveness, for I repent and ask for forgiveness a hundred times every day” (D:Wetr,26 & M:Zekr;41 & T:Tafseer Sorah 47;1 & Ma:Adab57 & Da:Reqaq;15) Allah the Highest likes to forgive and called Himself the Often Forgiving, Allah the Highest said: “THEN I SAID: ‘ASK YOUR LORD FOR FORGIVENESS FOR HE IS OFTEN FORGIVING” (S: 71 A: 10) It is never too late for repentance and seeking forgiveness. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “He who repents before the sun rises from the west, Allah will forgive him” (M: Zekr; 43) No sins are too much for forgiveness; neither in type or quantity. “SAY: MY SLAVES WHO EXCESSIVELY WRONGED THEIR OWN SOULS, DO NO DESPAIR OF ALLAH’S MERCY, FOR ALLAH FORGIVES ALL SINS, HE IS THE MOST FORGIVING, THE MOST MERCIFUL” (S: 39 A: 43) The only thing Allah the Highest does not forgive is for partners to be worshiped besides Him, or to be disbelieved totally “ALLAH DOES NOT FORGIVE FOR PARTNERS TO BE WORSHIPED BESIDES HIM, AND FORGIVES EVERY THING ELSE FOR WHOM HE WILLS” (S: 4 A: 48) No one can claim then that they are not sinners or that they do not sin, for Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “All the children of Adam are sinners, and the best of the sinners are those who repent” (A: 3; 189 & T: Quiamah; 49 & Ma: Zohd; 30) The early hours of the morning, that is the last third of the night before Fajr is the best time to pray for forgiveness. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “When the last third of the night only is left, Allah the Exalted and the Majestic descends to the Lower Heaven and says: ‘Who shall ask of me and I will give him, who shall ask Me for forgiveness and I will forgive him, who shall ask Me to relieve his suffering and I will relieve him’ and He continues like this until dawn” (B:Dawat;14 & M:Musafreen;168,169 & D:Sonah;19 & T:Dawat;78) Indeed, our repentance pleases Allah the Highest very much, for He cares for us. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him explained this in a vivid analogy, he said: “Allah is more pleased with the repentance of one of his slaves than a man travelling in a barren desert which kills those travelling through it. He lost his camel carrying his food, water, provisions and all he needs. When he could not find it, and felt his death was near, he thought to himself: ‘I shall go back to where I lost it to die there’. He went back to that place, where sleep overcame him. When he wake up, found the camel by his head, carrying his food, drink, provisions and all he needs” (M:Tawbah;1-8 & B:Dawat;4 & Ma:Zohd;30 & A:1;383) 3- Those who are patient and persevere. For patience and perseverance are needed to: a- To carry out what the obedience of Allah the Highest involves of duties and worship. b- To refrain from disobeying Allah the Highest and keep away from the prohibitions. c- At the times of suffering and calamity. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Patience and perseverance is light” (M:Taharah;1 & T:Dawat;85 & N:Zakah;1 & Ma:Taharah;5 & A:5;342) Allah the Highest helps us to be patient and persevere if we desire that. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Whoever desires to be patient and persevere, Allah will help him to be patient and persevere”. (M: Zakah; 124 & N: Zakah; 85 & A: 3; 12) Allah the Highest promises those who are patient and persevere in matters of faith a great reward saying: “WHAT YOU HAVE WILL RUN OUT, BUT WHAT IS WITH ALLAH IS EVERLASTING, AND WE WILL REWARD THOSE WHO ARE PATIENT AND PERSEVERE ACCORDING TO THE BEST OF THEIR DEEDS” (S:16 A:96)
4- THE TRUE. True in Faith. True in their words and deeds. True in their intentions.
5- THE DEVOUT IN WORSHIP: Worshipping Allah the Highest is the first purpose for the creation of man, Allah the Highest said: “I DID NOT CREATE MAN AND JINN FOR ANYTHING, BUT TO WORSHIP ME” (S:51 A:56) To be devout in our worship of Allah the Highest is to fulfill our reason for creation.
6- THE CHARITABLE:
Charity and spending in the cause of Allah the Highest has been discussed in detail before. It is one of the practical ways of expressing faith, to give from our wealth, which we love and work for. To give out of it seeking Allah’s pleasure and obeying His commands is a sign of sincerity in faith.
We ask Allah the Highest that we will be of those spoken about in these two Ayahs.
