Jun 11th, 2008 Al-Emran 31-32
31- SAY: IF YOU LOVE ALLAH, THEN FOLLOW ME AND ALLAH WILL LOVE YOU, AND FORGIVE YOU YOUR SINS FOR ALLAH IS MOST FORGIVING AND MOST COMPASSIONATE. 32- SAY: “OBEY ALLAH AND THE MESSENGER”, BUT IF THEY TURN AWAY, ALLAH DOES NOT LOVE THE DISBELIEVERS. Allah the Highest is telling those who strive for His love and those who say that they love Him, how they may gain His Love. We like to be loved by whom we love. The way is simple if not necessarily an easy one, which is to obey Allah the Highest and His messenger, prayer and peace upon him. There are the particular characteristics Allah the Highest loves a believer for: 1- Being Charitable: For Allah the Highest said: “AND SPEND IN THE CAUSE OF ALLAH AND DO NOT LET YOUR OWN HANDS CAST YOU INTO DESTRUCTION, AND GIVE FOR CHARITY FOR ALLAH LOVES THE CHARITABLE”. (S: 2 A: 195) Allah the Highest loves the charitable and is charitable to the charitable. 2- The Repentant: Those who repent from sin, for Allah the Highest said: “ALLAH LOVES THOSE WHO REPENT”. (S: 2 A: 222) Repentance is, to stop committing a particular sin, ask Allah the Highest for forgiveness, and then not returning to that sin again. We all sin, but we should not continue sinning. Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, said: “But all the children of Adam are sinful, and the best of the sinful are the repentant”. (T: Qyamah; 49 & Ma: Zohd; 30 & Da: Reqaq; 18 & A: 3; 198) 3- The Pious: Piety involves a number of the characteristics we discussed before. Allah the Highest loves the pious, for He said: “INDEED, THOSE WHO FULFILL THEIR COVENANTS AND ARE PIOUS, FOR ALLAH LOVES THE PIOUS”. (S: 3 A: 76) 4- Those who are Patient and Persevere in the cause of Allah: That is those who are patient and persevere in obeying Allah the Highest and abstaining from sin, and in worshipping Him. Allah the Highest said: “AND HOW MANY A PROPHET FOUGHT AND WITH THEM MANY GODLY PEOPLE, THEY DID NOT LOOSE HEART BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY SUFFERED IN THE CAUSE OF ALLAH, NOR DID THEY WEAKEN OR GIVE IN, AND ALLAH LOVES THOSE WHO ARE PATIENT AND PERSEVERE”. (S: 3 A: 146) 5- To hold together with other Muslims when facing an enemy: For there is strength in unity and weakness in division, therefore at times when the Muslims are threatened, Allah the Highest loves them to stick together as one. Allah the Highest said: “TRULY ALLAH LOVES THOSE WHO FIGHT IN HIS CAUSE IN LINES (OR RANKS) AS IF THEY ARE ONE CEMENTED STRUCTURE”. (S: 61 A: 4) 6- Those who put their trust in Allah: Whenever we carry out any undertaking, we should employ the best means possible for its success, besides then putting our trust in Allah to help us. Allah the Highest said: “WHEN YOU MAKE A DECISION, PUT YOUR TRUST IN ALLAH FOR ALLAH LOVES THOSE WHO PUT THEIR TRUST IN HIM”. (S: 3 A: 159) Putting one’s trust in Allah is a sign of our deep faith in Him. 7- The Just: Injustice causes hatred and animosity between people. Upholding justice in society makes that society, godly, happy and cohesive. Allah the Highest said: “AND IF YOU JUDGE BETWEEN PEOPLE, JUDGE BETWEEN THEM JUSTLY, FOR ALLAH LOVES THOSE WHO ARE JUST”. (S: 5 A: 42) 8- Those who Purify themselves both Bodily and Spiritually: Allah the Highest is pure, and loves those who are pure and purify themselves. Allah the Highest said:”IN IT THERE ARE MEN WHO PURIFY THEMSELVES, AND ALLAH LOVES THOSE WHO PURIFY THEMSELVES”. (S: 5 A: 108) There is no credit is saying that one loves and follows Allah the Highest and His messenger, and not obeying them. Rejecting Allah’s way, leads to rejection by Allah. This applies for all times and in all places, for Allah’s commands do not apply to any particular time or place but for always When Allah the Highest loves a person, he makes them loved and accepted by every one in the Heavens and Earth. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “When Allah loves one of His slaves, He calls Gabriel and says: “I love so and so, love him”. Gabriel will say to the people of the Heavens: “Your Lord loves so and so, loves him”, and the people of the Heavens will love him, and he will be liked and accepted by people on Earth. And when Allah hates a slave of His He does likewise”. (B: Adab; 41 & M: Ber; 157 & A: 2:267) This does not mean that the people loved by Allah the Highest will have an easy life, for every one of us is to be tried and tested. Those loved by Allah the Highest will be tried and tested more than those Allah does not love. Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, said: “When Allah loves some people, He afflicts them”. (A: 5; 427 & T; Zohd; 56) Indeed, Allah the Highest may protect His loved slave from the things which may tempt him in this life, like wealth and power, if Allah knows that that person can not handle their temptation. Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, said: “Allah the Exalted in Power, the Majestic protects His believing slave from the temptations of this life, as you may protect your sick from food or drink fearing to harm them”. (Mal: Teb; 1 & A: 5; 427) Allah the Highest is the Ally, protector and supporter of the person He loves. Allah is with them giving them, His support in every thing they do. Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, said that Allah the Highest said: “He who has animosity with one of My allies of men, I will wage war against him. My slave does not draw nearer to Me through any thing that I love more than what I made a duty upon him. And My slave will keep drawing near to Me through Nafl (extra worship) until I love him. When I love him, I become the hearing he hears with, the vision he sees with, the hand he strikes with and the leg he walks with. If he asks of Me, I will give him, and if he seeks My protection, I will protect him. I do not hesitate to do something I am going to do as with the soul of My believing slave, if he hates death, and I hate to upset him”. (B: Reqaq; 38) Such is the great status and honour of the believers whom Allah the Highest loves.
