35- AS THE WIFE OF EMRAN SAID: “MY LORD, I DEDICATED WHAT IS IN MY WOMB FOR YOUR SERVICE, ACCEPT THIS FROM ME, FOR YOU HEAR AND KNOW ALL THINGS.

36- WHEN SHE DELIVERED HIM, SHE SAID: “MY LORD, I DELIVERED A FEMALE, AND ALLAH KNOWS BETTER WHAT SHE DELIVERED, AND I CALLED HER MARIAM, AND I ASK YOUR PROTECTION FOR HER AND HER OFFSPRING, FROM THE REJECTED SATAN.

37- HER LORD ACCEPTED HER GRACIOUSLY, AND BROUGHT HER UP GOOD AND PURE, AND ZAKARIAH WAS ASSIGNED FOR HER CARE (IN THE TEMPLE), WHENEVER HE ENTERED THE CHAMBER ON HER, HE FOUND SHE HAD PROVISIONS, HE SAID: “MARIAM, WHERE ARE THESE PROVISIONS FROM?”  SHE SAID: “IT IS FROM ALLAH, FOR ALLAH PROVIDES TO WHOM HE WILLS WITHOUT LIMITS”.

Emran’s wife was pregnant.  She promised her offspring for the service of the temple.  This was usually done with the boys, not the girls.  When Emran’s wife gave birth to a girl, they called Mariam, she asked Allah the Highest to protect her and keep her safe and pure, and the same for her offspring.

Allah the Highest graciously accepted Mariam, protected her and her offspring from Satan, and she grow up to be pure and righteous.   Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “There is not a newborn that is not probed by Satan when born, he starts screaming then, except the son of Mariam (Mary) and his mother”.  (M: Fadael; 146)

Mariam grow up under the protection, care and guidance of Allah the Highest.  She was honoured further by carrying and giving birth to Jesus, Allah’s messenger.  Indeed, Allah the Highest raised her status above any other female on Earth.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Fatimah is the foremost of the women of Paradise, next only to Mariam the daughter of Emran”.  (A: 3; 80)

Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him also said: “The best of the women of mankind are, Mariam the daughter of Emran, Khadeja the daughter of Khowayled, Fatimah the daughter of Mohamed, and Asiah the wife of pharaoh”. (A: 3; 135)

As a female, she had to have a guardian in the temple, and Zakariah who was the prophet of the children of Israel because her guardian.  Zakariah was also married to her mother’s sister, so he was the closest kin to her in the temple.  It is worth noting that this guardianship did not go without dispute.  Other priests in the temple wanted to this guardianship as a matter of honour and disputed with their prophet Zakariah over it.  Allah the Highest said about it: “AND YOU WERE NOT WITH THEM AS THEY CAST THEIR PENS IN THE WATER TO SEE WHO WILL BE THE GUARDIAN OF MARIAM, AND YOU WERE NOT WITH THEM WHEY THEY DISPUTED”.  (S: 3 A: 44)

Mariam became under the guardianship of the prophet Zakariah peace upon him, and under the care and protection of Allah the Highest.

When Zakariah visited her in the chamber, he finds that she has food he did not bring her.  It was also said that he used to find that she has the fruit of the winter in summer and the fruit of summer in winter.  Asking her where she has it from, she said that it is from Allah.

Zakariah did not have any children then, but when he saw that he really wished to have such good and righteous child.  This will be detailed in the next Ayahs.
