38- THEN ZAKARIAH PRAYED TO HIS LORD: “MY LORD GRANT ME FROM YOU GOOD AND PURE OFFSPRING, YOU HEAR OUR DAWA.

39- THE ANGELS CALLED HIM WHILE HE WAS STANDING PRAYING IN THE CHAMBER: “ALLAH GIVES YOU THE GOOD NEWS OF YEHIA (JOHN), HE WILL BELIEVE IN THE WORD FROM ALLAH, A MASTER, A CHASTE, AND A PROPHET OF THE RIGHTEOUS.

40- HE SAID: “MY LORD, HOW WILL I HAVE A SON WHILE I REACHED OLD AGE AND MY WIFE IS BARREN?”  HE SAID: “SUCH IS ALLAH, HE DOES WHAT HE WILLS”

41- HE SAID: “MY LORD GIVE ME A SIGN”.  (THE ANSWER WAS) YOUR SIGN IS NOT TO SPEAK TO PEOPLE FOR THREE DAYS EXCEPT BY GESTURE AND SINGS, REMEMBER YOUR LORD A GREAT DEAL, AND HYMN HIS PRAISES IN THE EVENINGS AND IN THE MORNING”. 

Zakariah saw Allah the Highest providing for Mariam without any means as far as she is concerned, which inspired him to ask Allah for a child which he wants but has no means to have.  Zakariah was old, and his wife Elizabeth was barren and she was old too.  Therefore, it was impossible for them to have a child by human means.  Yet Zakariah new that nothing was impossible for Allah the Highest and what he saw happening with Mariam encourage and inspired him further.

Zakariah peace upon him, did not ask Allah the Highest for any child, but for good and righteous child.  More details of Zachariah’s prayer in Sorah Mariam “MENTION THE MERCY OF YOUR LORD TO HIS SLAVE ZAKARIAH * AS HE CALLED UPON HIS LORD IN PRIVATE * HE SAID: ‘MY LORD, MY BONES BECAME BRITTLE AND MY HEAD GLISTENS WITH WHITE HAIR, BUT I HAS NEVER SUFFER AFTER ASKING YOU MY LORD * NOW I FEAR FOR MY DEPENDANTS AFTER ME, WHILE MY WIFE IS BARREN, SO GRANT ME AN HEIR FROM YOURSELF * TO INHERIT ME, AND THE FAMILY OF JACOB, AND MAKE HIM RIGHTEOUS WHO WILL PLEASE YOU”.  (S: 19 A: 2-6)

An angel went to Zakariah while praying at the alter and told him that Allah the Highest answered his Dawa giving him a son who will be called Yehia (John) who will also believe in Allah’s word (Jesus) and a master, and chaste (does not have marital relation with women) and a righteous prophet.

Zakariah enquired as to how will this happen, he did not question whether it will or not.  He was told that such is Allah, he does what he wills; the means are His. 

Zakariah Asked Allah the Highest to give him a sign that this will happen, something he can feel and sense.  His sign was that he was unable to speak to people for 3 days except by signs, but not words and speech.  Allah the Highest commanded him also to remember his Lord a great deal and to hymn His praises by day and night. 

Allah the Highest gave Zakariah every thing he asked for, although Zakariah did not have the human means to have them, but this does not matter for Allah Who makes the means.
