44- THIS IS OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNSEEN, WE REVEAL TO YOU.  YOU WERE NOT WITH THEM AS THEY CAST THEIR PENS TO SEE WHO WILL BE IN CHARGE OF MARIAM GUARDIANSHIP, AND YOU WERE NOT WITH THEM AS THEY DISPUTED.  

When Mariam grow up, she had to go to the temple live as her mother vowed her to the service of the temple.  Being a female, she had to have a guardian, and all the priests wanted to be her guardian.  They disputed with Zakariah, who was their prophet and the husband of the sister of Miriam’s mother, therefore her nearest relation in the temple.  They decided to make a draw between them.

What they used to do was for each man to tale a pen of those he writes the Torah with.  They all cast their pens in the river Jordon, the person whose pen is taken away by the water current, wins the draw.  The priests cast their pens so did Zakariah peace upon him, and Zakariah won.  They repeated the act three times, and Zakariah won in the three times.  All this showed very bad manner of the priests with their prophet Zakariah peace upon him.

These Ayahs were sent down to Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him during the visit of the Christians of Nagran in Yemen to Medina to see Mohamed prayer and peace upon him.  The new and old testaments do not mention this dispute.  This knowledge about the things they did not see came from Allah the Highest and from Him only.

It is also interesting that the Christians of Nagran did not disagree with what came in this Ayah, and did not deny its truth.
