Al-Emran 59-64

59- THE PARABLE OF JESUS AS FAR AS ALLAH IS CONCERNED IS THAT OF ADAM, HE CREATED HIM FROM CLAY, AND THEN SAID TO HIM: “BE” AND HE WAS.

60- THIS IS THE TRUTH FROM YOUR LORD; THEREFORE DO NOT BE OF THE DOUBTFUL.

61- IF THEY ARGUE WITH YOU AFTER THE TRUTH THAT CAME TO YOU, THEN SAY: “LET US CALL OUR SONS AND YOUR SONS, OUR WOMEN AND YOUR WOMEN, AND OURSELVES AND YOURSELVES, THEN EARNESTLY PRAY TO MAKE ALLAH’S CURSE ON THE LIARS”.

62- THIS IS THE TRUE ACCOUNT, AND THERE IS NO GOD OTHER THAN ALLAH, INDEED HE IS THE MOST EXALTED IN POWER, THE WISE.

63- BUT IF THEY TURN THEIR BACKS ON YOU, ALLAH KNOWS WELL THOSE WHO DO MISCHIEF.

64- SAY: “O PEOPLE OF THE BOOK, COME TO A WORD IN COMMON BETWEEN OURSELVES AND YOURSELVES: TO WORSHIP ALLAH AND WORSHIP NO PARTNERS BESIDES HIM, NOR ARE WE TO TAKE FROM AMONGST OURSELVES LORDS INSTEAD OF ALLAH.  IF THEY TURN AWAY FROM YOU, SAY: “BEAR WITNESS THAT WE ARE MUSLIMS”.

The delegation of the Christians of Nagran in Yemen went on arguing with Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him.  They asked what Islam says about Jesus peace upon him?  They argued that he is the son of God as he does not have a human father.  Allah the Highest answers this claim in Ayah 59, stating that the creation of Jesus peace upon him is similar to the creation of Adam peace upon him.  Indeed, the creation of Adam peace upon him was a greater miracle as he had no father or mother but was created from clay.  Allah the Highest creates with a word “Be”, and does not need means for His creation.

This is the truth, the only truth which no one should doubt.  What Allah says is the truth, and the Quran is Allah’s very words.

Allah the Highest commanded his messenger prayer and peace upon him that if the Christians argue with him any further to invite them to a challenge.  Each group was to call their children, women and selves then earnestly pray to Allah to curse the liars.

Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him obeyed Allah’s command and invited them for the challenge.  On the agreed time and date, Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him went accompanied by Ali, Fatema, Al-Hassan, and Al-Hussein.  The Christians of Nagran declined to go ahead with the challenge at the last minute.

Hozifa Ibn El-Yaman, Allah’s messenger’s companion narrated: “Al-Aqeb and Al-Sayed; the chiefs of Nagran came to Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him.  They were to pray to Allah for His curse on the liars.  One of them said to the other: “We should never do that, for if he is a prophet and we curse him and he curses us, we will never survive, neither will our offspring after us”.  Then they said to Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him: “We will give you what you want (to be under Islamic rule).  Send with us an honest man, no one but an honest man”.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said to them: “I will send with you an honest man, truly honest”.  Allah’s messenger’s companions raised their head to be seen, hoping to be chosen.  Then he said: “Rise Abu Obidah”.  When he rose, Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “This is the ‘Amen’ (honest and keeper) of this nation”.  (B: Magazi; 72)

Abu Obidah was sent to be their Amer (chief) and judge.

This delegation did not embrace Islam on this visit, except for one man who was the son of their chief.  Islam spread later in this part, by example and persuasion, not by force as some claim.  It is interesting however that the delegation did not deny the prophecy of Mohamed prayer and peace upon him either.

Allah the Highest affirms again that this is the truth and those who deny it do this for their own interests, with full knowledge of what they are doing.

Allah the Highest commands us to try to come to agreement with the people of the book, to believe in and worship Allah the Highest alone with no partners of any king, human, angel or idle.  This Allah the Highest does not forgive.

Allah the Highest also forbids us from taking each other as Lords instead of Him.  We do not necessarily have to worship the lord, but to treat him as we should be treating Allah the Highest.  To glorify him instead of Allah, and to seek to please him even at the cost of displeasing Allah and obey him instead of obeying Allah, or to love as we should love Allah.  Allah the Highest said:  “AND OF MEN THOSE WHO TAKE EQUALS BESIDES ALLAH, THEY LOVE THEM AS THEY SHOULD LOVE ALLAH, THOSE WHO BELIEVE LOVE ALLAH MORE.  AND IF THE EVIL DOERS SEE AS THEY SEE THE PUNISHMENT THAT ALL POWER BELONGS TO ALLAH, AND THAT ALLAH IS SEVERE IN PUNISHMENT * THEN THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN FOLLOWED SHALL DISSOCIATE THEMSELVES FROM THOSE WHO FOLLOWED THEM, AS THEY WILL SEE THE PUNISHMENT, AND THEY WILL BE CUT OFF FROM ALL * AND THOSE WHO FOLLOWED THEM SHALL SAY: “IF WE HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE TO DISSOCIATE OURSELVES FROM THEM AS THEY DISSOCIATED THEMSELVES FROM US”.  THUS DOES ALLAH SHOW THEM THEIR DEEDS AS REGRETS FOR THEM, FOR THEY WILL NEVER EXIT FROM FIRE”.  (S: 2 A: 165-167)

Allah the Highest commands us to always testify that there is no God other than Allah, and announce the belief and let other non-believers be witnesses on our belief.
