Al-Emran 78

78- AND OF THEM THOSE WHO TWIST THEIR TONGUES WITH THE SCRIPTURE, SO THAT YOU MAY THINK IF IS OF THE SCRIPTURE, WHILE IT IS NOT OF THE SCRIPTURE, AND THEY SAY IT IS FROM ALLAH, WHILE IT IS NOT FROM ALLAH, AND THEY KNOWINGLY SAY LIES CONCERNING ALLAH.

Lying varies in degrees according to about what or whom a person lie, its consequences, and the person’s intention of the lie.  There is no doubt that the worst kind of lying is that concerning Allah the Highest, then His messenger prayer and peace upon him.  It is because it is concerning Allah, and then it misguides people, which is worse than loosing money or property.  Allah the Highest said: “DO YOU HOPE THAT THEY WILL BELIEVE FOR YOU WHEN SOME OF THEM WOULD HEAR ALLAH’S WORDS THEN PERVERT IT’S MEANING, AFTER THEY UNDERSTOOD IT, KNOWINGLY?” (S: 2 A: 75)

And said:” WOE IS FOR THOSE WHO WRITE THE BOOK WITH THEIR OWN HANDS THEN SAY: ‘THIS IS FROM ALLAH’, WHILE IT IS NOT FROM ALLAH, IN ORDER TO SELL IT FOR A MISERLY PRICE.  WOE TO THEM BECAUSE OF WHAT THEIR HANDS HAVE WRITTEN AND WOE TO THEM BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY HAVE EARNED”.   (S: 2 A: 79)

Such is the gravity of the sin of lying concerning Allah; it is punished by the Hell-Fire.  Allah’s messenger’s prayer and peace upon him said: “Whoever lies concerning the Quran, without knowledge of the Quran, he will have his place in the Fire”.  (A: 1; 323,327)

And said: “Do not lie concerning me, for whoever lies concerning me; will be sent to the Fire”. (B: Elm; 38 & M: Zohd; 72 & D: Elm; 4 & T: Fetan; 70)

Allah’s words and His messenger’s words may be perverted themselves and changed, or having their meaning perverted.  There are always times when it is not to our advantage in this life, as we see it, to follow Allah’s commands.  At these times, we often find those who are prepared to pervert the meanings of Allah words and His messenger’s for a brief worldly gain, at the cost of their Hereafter.  We should always be aware of this, and that the words of man do not change the words of Allah and His messenger.

Traditions and social habits are very strong and deeply rooted.  Allah sent His book and messenger to guide us, and to prevail over our lives.  Sometimes Allah’s commands do not agree with the traditions we have been brought up with, and which are often difficult to change.  We should always remember that Allah’s religion is to correct us and our way of life, not for us to correct it.  One should resist the temptation to carry one with traditions and social customs that are in contradiction with Allah’s commands, rather than trying to follow Allah’s commands.

A great deal of the traditions and social customs in our societies are in harmony with Islamic teachings, and are nice to carry on with.  It is nice to have a local tradition.
