Al-Emran 92

92- YOU WILL NOT ACHIEVE RIGHTEOUSNESS UNTIL YOU SPEND OUT OF WHAT YOU LOVE, AND WHATEVER YOU SPEND, ALLAH HAS FULL KNOWLEDGE OF.

The believers can nit achieve the noble state of righteousness, unless one spends in the cause of Allah’s pleasure, and then spending out of the things one loves.  It is not spending more, or spending the valuable things, but spending out of the things one loves.

Allah the Highest told us in Sorah Baqarah to spend out of the good and pure things we have “YOU WHO BELIEVE, SPEND OUT OF THE GOOD AND PURE THINGS YOU EARNED, AND OUT OF WHAT WE BROUGHT FORTH FOR YOU FROM THE EARTH, AND DO NOT SEEK THE EVIL OF IT TO SPEND, THE THINGS YOU WILL NOT TAKE EXCEPT WITH CLOSED EYES (S: 2 A: 267)

Spending out of the things we love is a step further.  It shows that the believer’s desire for what Allah the Highest has is greater than one’s desire for his own pleasures.  It shows the believer’s certainty of the unseen, the Hereafter and Allah’s recompense.

When Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him received this Ayah, many of his companions gave to charity many valuable things they possessed, aiming to achieve righteousness.

Omar Ibn Khatab said to Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him: “I acquired land in Khyber; I never acquired any possession more precious to me than this.  What do you command me to do with it?  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “If you like, keep the land and give its crop as Sadaqah (charity)” (N: Ihbas; 2)

Abu Talha, who was one of the wealthiest men of the Ansar, had a well in Medina, which was his most loved possession.  It was near the mosque and its water had a pleasant taste.  He went to Allah’s messenger and said: “Allah’s messenger, Allah the blessed and the Highest said: ‘YOU WILL NOT ACHIEVE RIGHTEOUSNESS UNTIL YOU SPEND OUT OF WHAT YOU LOVE’ and my most beloved possession is the well.  I give it as a charity in the cause of Allah, and I hope that Allah will keep it and reward me for it.  Place it Allah’s messenger as Allah shows you”.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Good, this is a profitable transaction.  I heard what you said and I see that you give it to your relatives”.  Abu Talha said: “I will Allah’s messenger”.  He shared it out between his relatives and cousins.  (B: Zakah; 44 & M: Zakah; 42 & Ma: Sadaqah; 2)

Abd Allah Ibn Omar Ibn El-Khatab said: “When I heard this Ayah, I thought of what Allah the Highest has given me, and I did not find any thing I love more that a Roman woman slave I possess.  I said: ‘She is free for the sake of Allah’

It was also reported that he freed his very clever and well liked slave Nafae.

When Zyd Ibn Al-Haretha heard this Ayah, he said: “Allah, you know that none of my possessions I love more than this horse of mine”.  He took the horse to Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him and said: “This is in the cause of Allah”.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him took it and gave it to Osama, Zyd's son saying: “take it”.  Zyd Looked upset, Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said to him: “Allah accepted it (the charity) from you”.  (Ibn Jarir Al-Tabari)

This is how Allah’s messenger’s companions desired to achieve righteousness.  They desired what is with Allah more than what they had in this life, and desired the Hereafter more than this life.
