128- YOU CAN NOT DO ANYTHING IN THIS MATTER, WHETHER ALLAH FORGIVES THEM OR PUNISHES THEM, THEY ARE WRONG-DOERS.
129- AND TO ALLAH BELONGS ALL THERE IS IN THE HEAVENS AND IN THE EARTH, HE FORGIVES WHOM HE WILLS AND PUNISHES WHOM HE WILLS, AND IS MOST FORGIVING, MOST MERCIFUL.
Forgiveness and punishment are in the hands of Allah the Highest, not us. Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, was injured in the battle of Ohud, his helmet smashed, both his cheeks pierced and his tooth broken. He said: “How would people who cut the head of their prophet succeed?” Then Allah the Highest sent this Ayah down “YOU CAN NOT DO ANYTHING IN THIS MATTER, WHETHER ALLAH FORGIVES THEM OR PUNISHES THEM, THEY ARE WRONG-DOERS” (B: Magazi; 21 & T: Tafseer Sorah 3; 10 & Ma: Fetan; 23 & A: 3; 99)
It is also reported that Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, cursed the disbelievers in the Salah after rising from the last Rokoo, then Allah the Highest sent this Ayah “YOU CAN NOT DO ANYTHING IN THIS MATTER”. (B: Magazi; 21 & Da: Salah; 216 & A: 2; 93,423)
This is telling Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, not to condemn the disbelievers or curse them. In fact, Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, was asked: “O Allah’s messenger, would you curse the disbelievers”. He said: “I was not sent to curse, but was sent as a mercy”. (M: Ber; 87)
Abd Allah Ibn Masoud, Allah’s messenger companion, said that Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, said: “One of the prophets of Allah was hit by his people. He wiped the blood of his face saying: “My Lord forgive my people, for they do not know”. (M: Jihad; 105 & B: Anbya; 54 & Ma: Fetan; 23 & A: 1; 380,423)
We do not know what is to become of people, and we do not know that Allah’s Mercy will not embrace them or that they will not be guided at some time. Therefore, we should never curse, not even a disbeliever. Most of the disbelievers at the time of Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, believed and became Muslims.
Khalid Ibn El-Waleed, the man who led the disbeliever’s 200 strong cavalry around the mountain of Ohud to attack the Muslim army from behind, became a Muslim. He was one of the most gallant Muslim leaders in their wars against both the Persian and the Roman Empires.
Wahshi, the Abyssinian slave who killed Hamza, Allah’s messenger paternal uncle, during the battle of Ohud, became a believer. He did in fact kill Musilamah, the man who falsely claimed to be a prophet, and the Muslims fought after Allah’s messenger’s death.
Therefore, we should not curse people, but ask Allah the Highest to guide them. Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, said: “A believer is not someone who insults, curses, is indecent or obscene”. (T: Ber; 48 & a: 1; 405,416)
Those who curse will be dishonoured on the Day of Resurrection. Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, said: “Those who curse will not be allowed to intercede or to be witnesses on the Day of Resurrection”. (N: Ber; 85)
To Allah belongs every thing in the heavens and earth. Allah the Highest is the absolute Lord who knows what others do not, and decides without any outside interference. However, Allah the Highest is most Merciful and Most Forgiving and His Mercy overcomes His Anger, which is the greatest hope for mankind.
