130- YOU WHO BELIEVE, DO NOT TAKE USURY DOUBLES AND MANY MULTIPLES, AND GUARD YOURSELVES FROM ALLAH’S DISPLEASURE SO THAT YOU MAY SUCCEED.

131- AND PROTECT YOURSELVES FROM THE FIRE WHICH HAS BEEN PREPARED FOR THE DISBELIEVERS.

132- AND OBEY ALLAH AND HIS MESSENGER, SO THAT YOU MAY ENJOY MERCY.

In between the Ayahs concerning the battle of Ohud, there are 9 Ayahs concerning purifying the soul of the believers.  They are also concerning obeying Allah the Highest and His messenger prayer and peace upon him.

The Arabs used to lend money for a fixed term with interest as happens with the banks now.  If the borrower was unable to pay the original sum with the interest at the agreed term, the total amount left will be doubled and so on.  This will make it even harder to pay the loan and so it will keep multiplying.

This does not mean that usury is permitted otherwise, for Allah the Highest has forbidden usury in any amount and any form.  Indeed, usury leads to Allah’s anger and to Allah the Highest waging war particularly against those who take it.  Allah the Highest said: “YOU WHO BELIEVE, GUARD YOURSELVES FROM ALLAH’S DISPLEASURE, AND LEAVE WHAT IS LEFT OF USURY IF YOU ARE TRULY BELIEVERS * IF YOU DO NOT, THEN BE WARNED ABOUT A WAR WAGED FROM ALLAH AND HIS MESSENGER, BUT IF YOU REPENT, YOU KEEP YOUR CAPITAL. NEITHER YOU DEAL WITH OTHERS UNJUSTLY NOR DEALT WITH UNJUSTLY”.   (S:2 A:278,279)

Not to take usury is to guard ourselves from Allah’s displeasure and anger and is to protect ourselves from the fire prepared for the disbelievers and evil-doers.  Usury is one of Allah’s prohibitions and one of the sources of his anger.
