Al-Emran 144

144- AND MOHAMED IS BUT A MESSENGER, AND THERE WERE MESSENGERS BEFORE HIM.  IF HE DIES OR IS KILLED, WILL YOU TURN BACK ON YOUR HEALS, AND HE WHO TURNS BACK ON THEIR HEALS WILL NOT HARM HIMSELF ONLY, AND ALLAH WILL RECOMPENSE THE THANKFUL.

During the battle of Ohud, Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, was injured and he then fell into a ditch which the disbelievers prepared earlier.  Someone said that he had been killed. This rumour spread in the Muslim army like wildfire, and many Muslims lost heart and stopped fighting.  Mosaab Ibn Omir, Allah’s messenger’s companion, went around the Muslim army saying: “Mohamed is but a messenger, and there were messengers before him”.

This was one of the factors which lead to the defeat of the Muslims.

In this Ayah, Allah the Highest reminds the Muslims of the fact that Mohamed, prayer and peace upon him, is a human being, eats, drinks, gets married, falls ill and ultimately dies like every on else.  It also reminds them that all the messengers died before, so will Mohamed, prayer and peace upon him.   No one should see him as anything more than human.

Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, died some seven years later, many of the Muslims did not want to believe this.  They were upset and bewildered.  Abu Bakr went to Allah’s messenger’s house, uncovered his face, kissed his head and cried.  Then he went to the Mosque and found Omar Ibn El-Khatab talking to the people there, he said to him: “Sit down Omar”.  Then he said to the Muslims: “For those who worship Mohamed, Mohamed has died, as for those who worship Allah, Allah is alive and does not die.  Then he recited “AND MOHAMED IS BUT A MESSENGER, AND THERE WERE MESSENGERS BEFORE HIM…………..”  It is reported that it was as if people did not know that this Ayah was sent down until Abu Bakr Recited it”.  (B:Janaez;3 & N:Janaez;11 & A:1;334 6;117)

Allah the Highest warns the Muslim nation about falling in the same mistake the other nations fell into.  Many nations did not follow the commands of Allah the Highest and His messenger after he has died.  Also some nations glorified their messengers and prophets, to the degree of making them gods, or sons of god.

Doing this turns the believers into disbeliever, and this does not harm Allah the Highest in any way, only the disbeliever.

No one should have any confusion about Mohamed prayer and peace upon him being a man, and a messenger of Allah, the son of a man and a woman.  He lived like human beings do, and died like human beings do also.
