154- AND THEN, AFTER FEAR ALLAH SENT DOWN UPON YOU PEACE AS SLUMBER WHICH CAME OVER SOME OF YOU , WHILE SOME OTHERS, WERE FULL OF THEIR OWN WORRIES, THINKING WHAT IS NOT TRUE ABOUT ALLAH, THE THINKING OF THE IGNORANCE.  THEY HIDE IN THEMSELVES WHAT THEY DO NOT REVEAL TO YOU, THEY SAY: ‘IF WE HAVE ANY POWER IN THIS MATTER, WE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN KILLED HERE’.  SAY: ‘IF YOU WERE IN YOUR OWN HOMES, THOSE WHO WERE DESTINED TO BE KILLED WOULD HAVE HAD TO GO TO THEIR PLACES OF DEATH’.  SO THAT ALLAH MAY TEST WHAT IS YOUR CHESTS AND PURIFY WHAT IS IN YOUR HEARTS AND ALLAH KNOWS WELL WHAT IS INSIDE YOU’.

Allah the Highest was Merciful to the Muslims.  After the battle and its distress, Allah the Highest sent them some peace.  This was in the form of slumber which took many of the Muslims and made them feel safe and sleep.  While some were very worried about themselves, thought that Allah the Highest abandoned them,  and that they will perish.  They could not rest, feel any peace or sleep.  Those who did not have enough trust of Allah in their hearts and doubted Allah’s support could not rest.

Abu Talha, Allah’s messenger’s companion reported: “We were taken by slumber while in our lines in the battle of Ohud.  My sword kept falling off my hand, and I pick it up, but the other group, the hypocrites, they worried about themselves only”.  (B: Magazi; 20 & T: Tafseer Sorah 3, 16 & A: 4; 29)

Al-Zobir Ibn El-Awam, Allah’s messenger’s companion reported: “Sleep was sent down upon us that day (Of Ohud).  While slumber was taking me, I heard Moteb Ibn Qushir saying: ‘If we had any say in the matter, we would not have been killed here’.  (Ibn Haban)

Allah the Highest answers those who had doubt in their hearts saying: ‘IF YOU WERE IN YOUR OWN HOMES, THOSE WHO WERE DESTINED TO BE KILLED WOULD HAVE HAD TO GO TO THEIR PLACES OF DEATH’.

Our fate and death will come to us regardless of where we are, for the time of our death is decided and written down before our birth.  Allah the Highest said: “WHEREVER YOU ARE, DEATH WILL COME TO YOU, EVEN IF YOU WERE IN STRONG AND HIGH TOWERS”.  (S: 4 78)

The reason for the test and trial is “SO THAT ALLAH MAY TEST WHAT IS YOUR CHESTS AND PURIFY WHAT IS IN YOUR HEARTS”

It was a test and trial for the Muslims then.  The Muslim’s faith, trust in Allah and obedience to the Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him were to be tested.  We had to learn that they are the most important factors in our victory.  Some might fight to protect their families, and others to show courage and valour, but these are not enough.  Allah the Highest demands the pure undoubting faith of the Muslim and the Muslim’s full trust in Allah, his Lord.
