Al-Emran 161

161- NO PROPHET WOULD ACT DISHONESTLY, AND WHOEVER ACTS DISHONESTLY WILL ON THE DAY OF RESURRECTION BRING WITH HIM WHAT HE HAS STOLEN, AND EVERY SOUL WILL BE RECOMPENSED FOR WHAT IT HAS EARNED AND THEY WILL NOT BE UNJUSTLY TREATED.

A piece of red cloth of the spoils of the battle of Badr was missed.  Some people were heard saying that Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him took it.  Allah the Highest sent this Ayah down answering them, defending His prophet and messenger prayer and peace upon him, and telling us about what happens to thieves on the Day of Resurrection of dishonor and disgrace.

Allah’s prophets are entrusted with Allah’s Word and commands, then is it possible that they would be dishonest with the earthly material.  Those who are dishonest and steel something by direct or indirect means, will face two situations on the Day of Resurrection:

1-    “WHOEVER ACTS DISHONESTLY WILL ON THE DAY OF RESURRECTION BRING WITH HIM WHAT HE HAS STOLEN”

There is humiliation and disgrace in a person being seen to bring with him all the things he stole or took through dishonest means, and this will be for every one to see.  Some will have a great deal to bring.

Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Do not let me see any of you on the Day of Resurrection come with a horse tied to his neck neighing, and he will say: help me.  And I will say to him: ‘I can not do anything for you, for I have informed you’. And do not let me see any of you on the Day of Resurrection come with a sheep bleating, and he will say: Help me.  And I will say: I can not help you, for I have informed you.  ………….”  (B:Jihad;189 & M:Emarah;24 & N:Zakah; 6 & A:2;426)

2-    “AND EVERY SOUL WILL BE RECOMPENSED FOR WHAT IT HAS EARNED AND THEY WILL NOT BE UNJUSTLY TREATED”.

The recompense of the thieves takes more than one form.

a-     Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him did not pray on those who stole the spoils of war.

b-    Allah’s punishment in the Hereafter.

Dishonesty is not only through stealing, but also dishonesty in discharging one’s responsibilities or in dealing with people, or by taking bribes even if in the form of gifts.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him put a man in charge of a job, and when he finished and came back he said: “Allah’s messenger, this is for you, and this is a present given to me”. He said to him: “Had you stayed in your father and mother’s home and see if you were to be given presents or not”. (B:Eman;3 & Da:Zakah;31)

3-    Allah the Highest does not accept charity out of money or property acquired dishonestly.

4-    When dishonesty and dishonest money spreads among people, Allah the Highest puts fear in their hearts, and they become weak.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Whenever dishonest earnings spread among people, Allah will throw fear into their hearts”.  (Mal:Jihad;26)

Many of Allah’s messenger’s companions were reluctant to take charge of any jobs where they will be in charge of the Muslim’s affairs, fearing not being able to discharge his responsibilities properly.

Omar Ibn El-Khatab, the second Khalifa used to look at the wealth of his governors before their appointment and at the end of their appointment.  If he finds that their wealth has increased excessively, he would take the excess.
