165- IF YOU WERE AFFLICTED, IN THE MEAN TIME YOU CAUSED TWICE AS MUCH, WILL YOU SAY: “HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?”, SAY: “IT IS FROM YOURSELVES”, INDEED ALLAH IS ABLE TO DO ALL THINGS.
166- WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU THE DAY THE TWO GROUPS MET WAS WITH ALLAH’S PERMISSION, SO THAT ALLAH MAY KNOW THE TRUE BELIEVERS.
167- AND TO KNOW THE HYPOCRITES, WHOM WHEN IT WAS SAID TO THEM: COME AND FIGHT IN THE CAUSE OF ALLAH OR REPEL THE ENEMY, THEY SAID: IF WE KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE ANY FIGHTING, WE WOULD HAVE FOLLOWED YOU. THEY WERE NEARER TO DISBELIEF THEN THAN TO BELIEF. THEY SAY WITH THEIR MOUTHS WHAT IS NOT IN THEIR HEARTS, AND ALLAH KNOWS WHAT THEY HIDE.
168- THOSE WHO SAID TO THEIR BROTHERS, WHEN THEY STAYED BEHIND THEMSELVES: IF THEY OBEYED US, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN KILLED. SAY: THEN KEEP DEATH AWAY FROM YOU IF YOU ARE TRUTHFUL.
The Muslims felt abandoned by Allah the Highest after the battle of Ohud. They felt deprived of Allah’s support, which saddened them, as well as their defeat, the 70 dead and the injury of Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him. They also wondered as to why this happen to them. Allah the Highest answered them with these Ayahs, to be a lesson to all the Muslims for all time:
1- Counting the casualties of both the battles of Badr and Ohud, the Muslims caused twice as many casualties as they suffered.
2- The affliction the Muslims suffered was due to their own deeds of disobedience to Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him.
3- What happened was with the knowledge and permission of Allah the Highest, who knew that they deserved what happened to them, and to teach us all an important lesson.
4- What happened was to sort out the believers from the hypocrites. Allah the Highest knew them, but the Muslims needed to know.
When the Muslim army marched out of Medina, 300 of them turned back with the head of the hypocrites Abd Allah Ibn Obi. One of the Muslims ran back after them, asking them to go and fight in the cause of Allah or at least to defend their town, he was answered: “If we knew that fighting would take place, we would have followed you”, meaning that they did not expect a fight. As if the 3,000 man strong army marched for more than 10 days across the desert without any aggressive intentions. They were at the time closer to being disbelievers than being believers, for what they did was not the action of believers.
After the battle, some those who turned back, felt guilty and regretted what they had done, while others felt happy that they did not join in the fighting, and were safe in their homes. They even said that if those who were killed had followed their example, they would not have been killed. As if they could save them from death “THEN KEEP DEATH AWAY FROM YOU IF YOU ARE TRUTHFUL”
In fact, those who fought in Ohud saved the whole of Medina, including those who did not fight, plus all the women and children who were in Medina, from the attack of the disbelievers.
