181- ALLAH HEARD THOSE WHO SAY: “ALLAH IS POOR AND WE ARE RICH”.  WE WILL WRITE WHAT THEY SAID AND THEIR KILLING OF THE PROPHETS FOR NOT JUST CAUSE, AND WE WILL SAY: “TASTE THE PENALTY OF THE FIRE”.

182- THIS IS BECAUSE WHAT YOUR OWN HANDS SENT BEFORE THEM, FOR ALLAH IS NOT UNJUST TO THE SLAVES.

183- THOSE WHO SAID: “ALLAH MADE A COVENANT WITH US NOT TO BELIEVER FOR A MESSENGER UNLESS HE SHOWS US A SACRIFICE THAT IS CONSUMED BY FIRE.  SAY: “OTHER MESSENGERS BEFORE ME CAME TO YOU WITH THE CLEAR SIGNS, AND WITH WHAT YOU SAID, WHY YOU KILLED THEM THEN IF YOU ARE TRUTHFUL?”

184- THEN, IF THEY REJECT YOU, THEY REJECTED MESSENGERS BEFORE YOU; THEY CAME WITH THE CLEAR SIGN, WRITTEN BOOKS, AND THE BOOK OF ENLIGHTENMENT.

A Jewish scholar in Medina commented on an Ayah in the Quran which says: “WHO IS HE WHO WILL LEND ALLAH A BEAUTIFUL LOAN AND ALLAH WILL DOUBLE IT FOR HIM MANY TIMES”.  The Jewish scholar said: “Allah is poor, for he wants to burrow from us”.  Than Allah the Highest sent this Ayah (181) down.  (Ibn Jarir Al-Tabari & Ibn Haban)

Allah the Highest answers this grave insult, stating that for whoever said it, it has written it down in their book of deeds, and for which he will suffer severe and painful punishment.

Although this was said by one man, Allah the Highest speaks about them in the pleural.  Also speaks about this group of Jews as if they killed prophets. This particular group of Jews did not kill any prophets, they made attempts on Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him a number of times after this Ayah was sent down.  Also they did not reject what they was said by their scholar nor did they disapprove the killing of the prophets by their forefathers, not even just in their hearts. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Whenever a sin is committed on Earth, he who sees it and hates or rejects it will be like he who was absent when it happened; and he who was absent when it happened, yet accepts it when he hears of it, he is like he who saw and accepted it”.  (D: Malahem; 17)

As mentioned before, the Jews of Medina made at least three attempts on Allah’s messenger’s life:

1-    They plotted to kill Mohamed prayer and peace upon him when he was talking to them in one of their markets, by throwing a big stone over his head.

2-    They tried to poison Mohamed prayer and peace upon him when a Jewish woman gave him a poisoned sheep as a present, putting an extra dose of poison in the shoulder which he liked.  Mohamed prayer and peace upon him said: “This sheep tells me that it is poisoned” and stopped and his companions, yet one of them had some meet of that sheep and died.

3-    A delegation of the Jews of Medina went to Makah to enthuse the disbelievers to form an alliance to attack the Muslims and eradicate them.  In the meantime, promising them help and to let them into the Medina through their walls.  An alliance army of 10 000 men was formed and it marched to and besieged Medina for a month before Allah the Highest sent down on them strong wind which blow them away.

“THOSE WHO SAID: “ALLAH MADE A COVENANT WITH US NOT TO BELIEVER FOR A MESSENGER UNLESS HE SHOWS US A SACRIFICE THAT IS CONSUMED BY FIRE”

In an attempt to justify their disbelief, the Jews claimed that Allah the Highest commanded them not to believe in any prophet unless he makes a sacrifice, then fire comes from heavens and consumes it.  They did disbelieve and killed prophets who showed them this sign.  Their disbelief was not due to lack of signs and evidence any way.  It is due to their evil envy as they did not have the prophet and messenger from amongst them “EVIL IS WHAT THEY SOLD THEIR SOULS FOR, TO DISBELIEVE BECAUSE OF INSOLENT ENVY THAT ALLAH SENDS HIS GRACE DOWN UPON WHOM HE WILLS OF HIS SLAVES” (S:2 A:90)

They disbelieved in other prophets who showed such signs, were given books and scripture enlightening them, but it made no difference to them, as their disbelieve was not because of lack of evidence, but rather the conscious will to reject any more prophets or messengers.
