Aug 27th, 2008 Al-Emran 187-189
187- AND AS ALLAH TOOK THE COVENANT OF THOSE WHO WERE GIVEN THE BOOK, TO MAKE IT CLEAR TO MANKIND, AND NEVER HIDE IT, BUT THEY REJECTED IT AND TURNED THEIR BACKS TO IT, AND SOLD IT FOR MISERLY GAIN; EVIL IS WHAT THEY BOUGHT. 188- AND DO NOT THINK THAT THOSE PLEASED WITH WHAT THEY GAINED AND LIKE TO BE THANKED FOR WHAT THEY DID NOT DO, DO NOT THINK THAT THEY WILL ESCAPE THE PUNISHMENT; THEY WILL HAVE A PAINFUL PUNISHMENT. 189- AND TO ALLAH BELONGS ALL THERE IS IN THE HEAVENS AND EARTH, AND ALLAH HAS POWER OVER ALL THINGS.
It is the duty of every believer and particularly the scholars to teach people their books and to make them clear. They should never hide the content of their books, even if it is against their personal interest. This is not what the children of Israel did. The children of Israel concealed parts of their book, perverted some parts and rewrote other parts. They did it for worldly gains, which is a miserly price, and at the expense losing the Hereafter, which is a great loss. If they truly believed in Allah and the Hereafter, they would never have done that. Allah the Highest said: “WOE TO THOSE WHO WRITE THE BOOK WITH THEIR OWN HANDS THEN SAY: ‘THIS IS FROM ALLAH’, WHILE IT IS NOT FROM ALLAH, IN ORDER TO SELL IT FOR A MISERLY PRICE. WOE TO THEM BECAUSE OF WHAT THEIR HANDS HAVE WRITTEN AND WOE TO THEM BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY HAVE EARNED”. (S: 2 A: 79) Allah the Highest also said: “THOSE WHO CONCEAL WHAT WE SENT DOWN OF THE CLEAR AYAHS AND GUIDANCE, AFTER WE MADE IT CLEAR TO MANKIND IN THE BOOK, THOSE ARE CURSED BY ALLAH AND THOSE WHO CURSE”. (S: 2 A: 152) Allah’s messenger, prayer and peace upon him, said: “He who is being asked about knowledge he knows, and hides it, on the Day of Resurrection he will be bridled with a bridle of fire”. (Ma: Moqademah; 24)
Then in Ayah 188; Allah the Highest is promising two groups of people punishment in the Hell-Fire. They are: 1- Those who are pleased with their wealth and like to keep it all to themselves and not give any one else a share of it or spend in the cause of Allah. 2- Those who like to be thanked and praised and have credit for what they did not do. This is a form of hypocrisy which Allah the Highest hates and forbids. Allah’s messenger,, prayer and peace upon him, also said: “Whoever makes a false claim for some gain; this will put him down in the sight of Allah”. (M: Eman; 167)
