31- IF YOU AVOID THE GRAVE SINS YOU ARE FORBIDDEN, WE WILL FORGIVE YOU YOUR BAD DEEDS, AND ADMIT YOU TO AN HONOURABLE PLACE.

In this very great Ayah, Allah the Highest is promising forgiveness of the smaller sins, if the believer avoids the grave sins.

So what are the grave sins we should avoid?

Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Avoid the seven sins that cause your destruction”.  They said: “What are they Allah’s messenger?”  He said: “Believing in partners besides Allah, Magic, killing the soul which made sacred except for a just cause, taking the money of the orphans, taking usury, turning away on the day of battle, and speaking indecently of the believing, pure and unaware women”.  (M: Eman; 145 & B: Wasaya; 23)

These are not all the grave sins, for Allah’s messenger spoke of others of them: “Believing in partners besides Allah, mistreating one’s parents, killing and to speak with falsehood and false testimony”.  (M: Eman; 143)

Abd Allah Ibn Omar asked Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him: “Which sin is the gravest at the sight of Allah?”  He said: “To believe in an equal to Allah who created you”.  Abd Allah said: “Then what?”  He said: “To kill your child for not wanting him to share you food with you”.  Abd Allah said: “Then what?”  He said: “To commit adultery with your neighbour’s wife”.  (M: Eman; 141)

The Grave sins are obviously more than seven.  Abd Allah Ibn Omar, Allah’s messenger companion and a scholar, was asked about the seven gravest sins, he said: “They are nearer to seventy than to seven”

It is said that to persist and insist on doing a smaller sin, makes it like committing a grave sin.  Yet asking Allah the Highest for forgiveness sincerely and frequently may be accepted by Allah the Highest, even when the sin is repeated.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Does not persist and insist, he who asks Allah for forgiveness, even if they go back to committing the same sin seventy times”.  (T:Dawat;106 & D:Wetr;36)

All the punishable sins, and all sins that are clearly forbidden in the Quran or Hadith are grave sins.

Yet one should remember that Allah the Highest may forgive every sin if asked to, therefore we should not despair of Allah’s Mercy and Forgiveness.  Allah the Highest said: “O YOU WHO TRANSGRESSED EXCESSIVELY AGAINST THEIR OWN SOULS, DO NOT DESPAIR OF ALLAH’S MERCY, FOR ALLAH FORGIVES ALL SINS, FOR HE IS THE MOST FORGIVING AND MOST MERCIFUL”.  (S:39 A:53)

Despairing of Allah’s Mercy and Forgiveness is a sign that a person has gone very badly astray of Allah’s Path.  Allah the Highest said: “ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE GONE VERY FAR ASTRAY WILL DESPAIR OF ALLAH’S MERCY”.  (S:15 A:56)

Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him has a great deal of love and compassion to his nation, all of them.  It is therefore that he kept his intercession for those who commit the gravest sins in his nation, he said: “My intercession is for those of my nation who commit the gravest sins”.  (T:Quyamah;11 & D:Sunah;21 & Ma:Zohd;37 & A:3;213)

It is therefore befitting that Allah the Highest said about his messenger: “THERE HAS COME TO YOU A MESSENGER FROM AMONGST YOU WHO GRIEVES FOR YOU SINFULNESS, WHO CARES FOR YOU AND WHO IS COMPASSIONATE AND MERCIFUL TO THE BELIEVERS”.  (S:9 A:128)
