36- AND WORSHIP ALLAH AND DO NOT WORSHIP ANY PARTNERS BESIDES HIM, AND BE GOOD TO YOUR PARENTS, YOUR BLOOD RELATIONS, THE ORPHANS, THE NEEDY, THE CLOSE NEIGHBOUR, THE FAR NEIGHBOUR, THE CLOSE COMPANION, THE WAYFARER, AND WHAT YOUR RIGHT HANDS POSSESS, INDEED ALLAH DOES NOT LOVE THOSE WHO ARE ARROGANT AND BOASTFUL.
There are a number of commands in this Ayah. They all add up to make person good and righteous. 1- To worship Allah the Highest only, and to worship no partners besides him. This is the essence of faith and its minimum requirement. Allah the Highest may forgive any sin but taking partners besides him. “ALLAH DOES NOT FORGIVE WORSHIPPING PARTNERS BESIDES HIM, AND FORGIVES WHATEVER ELSE FOR WHOM HE WILLS”. (S:4 A:48,116) 2- Allah the Highest lists the people we should be particularly good. This does not mean that it is alright for us not to be good with other, but being good with those people is particularly important: - Parents. The command to be good to one’s parents is repeated many times in the Quran. - Blood Relatives, including the close and distant blood relatives. - The Orphans. Every one has a duty to be kind to the orphans and help them as much as we can. If they Orphans are also blood relative, we have double the duty towards them. - The Poor and Needy. We have a duty towards the poor ones of us as Muslims. Allah the Highest made paying Zakah of our money a duty upon the Muslims, so that those in need will be provided for. - The Close neighbor. - The Distant neighbor. This means that, all those who share an area or a town should be treated as neighbors. - The Wayfarer. Is a person travelling away from his home, which might have difficulties and needs assistance. He might be a rich person at home, but has no means of getting help or money from there. - What our right hands possess. This includes our wives, and also the concubines. There are no concubines now as slavery was abolished. Allah the Highest is commanding us to be good to our wives as they tend to be the weaker side of the marital relationship. Also Allah the Highest made it the husband’s duty to look after the wife. At the End of the Ayah, Allah the Highest is reminding us that Pride and Arrogance are the two characters He dislikes most. They were the cause of Satan being thrown out or the Paradise and being despised and rejected until the Day of Resurrection.
