37-THOSE WHO ARE MISERLY AND COMMAND OTHERS TO BE MISERLY, AND HIDE WHAT ALLAH HAS GIVEN THEM OUT OF HIS BOUNTY, AND WE PREPARED A HUMILIATING PUNISHMENT FOR THE DISBELIEVERS.

38- AND THOSE WHO SPEND OF THEIR MONEY FOR PEOPLE TO SEE THEM SPENDING, YET THEY DO NOT BELIEVE IN ALLAH AND THE LAST DAY. THOSE WHOM SATAN IS THEIR CLOSE COMPANION, HE IS THE WORST CLOSE COMPANION.

39- AND WHAT COULD HAVE BEFALLEN THEM IF THEY BELIEVE IN ALLAH AND THE LAST DAY, AND SPEND OUT OF WHAT ALLAH PROVIDED FOR THEM, FOR ALLAH KNOWS ALL THERE IS ABOUT THEM.

Allah the Highest is speaking of the miserly people who do not wish to spend out of what Allah the Highest provided for them.  They are not only miserly but:

- advise others not to spend, which is to be miserly too.  They earn as much sin as those they misguide.

- Hide Allah’s bounty upon them.  Allah the Highest does not like us to hide His bounty upon us.  Allah the Highest said: “AND SPEAK OF THE BOUNTY OF YOUR LORD”.  (S: 93 A: 11)

Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Allah likes to see the signs of his bounty upon his slave”.  (T: Adab; 34 & A: 2; 311)

“AND WE PREPARED A HUMILIATING PUNISHMENT FOR THE DISBELIEVERS”. 

The disbelievers here mean those who disbelieve in Allah the Highest and also those who are ungrateful of his bounties upon them.  They are denied entry to the Paradise.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Does not enter the Paradise; a deceit, those reminding others of their charity, nor the miserly”.  (T: Ber; 41 & A: 1; 40)

Wealth is but one of the bounties Allah the Highest bestows upon us.  Allah the Highest also gives us wisdom, health, strength, children and many other bounties.  They Muslim should not hide these bounties.  Also it is miserly of him not to use them to help others. 

- When they spend of their wealth, it is not seeking Allah’s pleasure, but they like to be seen to be charitable.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Whoever does the deeds of the Hereafter seeking the lower life reward, he will not have a share of the Hereafter”. (A: 5; 134 & D: Adab; 10)

Allah the Highest knows what is inside up and knows our motives for doing every thing, and will recompense us according to our motives and intentions.  Allah the Highest said: “AND THOSE WHO DISBELIEVE, THEIR DEEDS ARE LIKE A MIRAGE IN A DRY DESERT, THE PERSON PARCHED WITH THIRST THINKS IT TO BE WATER, UNTIL HE REACHES IT, HE FINDS IT NOTHING, AND ALLAH THERE TO RECOMPENSE HIM IN FULL, FOR ALLAH IS SWIFT IN RECKONING”.  (S: 24 A: 39)

“THOSE WHOM SATAN IS THEIR CLOSE COMPANION, HE IS THE WORST CLOSE COMPANION”

Those people listen to Satan and take him for a close companion.  Satan Angered Allah and is destined to the Hell-Fire.  Will he ever lead any one else any where else.

“AND WHAT COULD HAVE BEFALLEN THEM IF THEY BELIEVE IN ALLAH AND THE LAST DAY, AND SPEND OUT OF WHAT ALLAH PROVIDED FOR THEM, FOR ALLAH KNOWS ALL THERE IS ABOUT THEM”

Spending has to be for Allah’s cause; therefore the belief in Allah should come first.  The charity is rewarded by Allah the Highest if the charitable person believes and gives the charity seeking Allah’s pleasure only.  Why should any one expect any reward from Allah the Highest if they do not believe in Him or are not doing it to please Him and for His sake.
