59- YOU WHO BELIEVE, OBEY ALLAH AND OBEY THE MESSENGER AND THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE IN COMMAND. IF YOU DISPUTE REGARDING A MATTER, REFER THIS MATTER TO ALLAH AND THE MESSENGER, IF YOU TRULY BELIEVE IN ALLAH AND THE LAST DAY; THIS IS BETTER FOR YOU AND MORE JUST.
60- HAVE YOU SEEN THOSE WHO CLAIM TO BELIEVE IN WHAT ALLAH SENT DOWN TO YOU AND WHAT HE SENT DOWN BEFORE YOU, THEY WISH TO SEEK THE JUDGMENT OF WHAT IS EVIL, WHILE THEY WERE COMMANDED TO DISBELIEVE IN HIM, FOR SATAN WISHES TO MISLEAD THEM FAR ASTRAY.
61- AND IF IT IS SAID TO THEM: “COME TO WHAT ALLAH SENT DOWN AND TO THE MESSENGER”, YOU WILL FIND THE HYPOCRITES, YOU WILL FIND THE HYPOCRITES TURNING AWAY TOTALLY FROM YOU.
62- SO WHAT IF THEY ARE AFFLICTED BECAUSE OF WHAT THEIR HANDS DID, THEN THEY COME SWEARING BY ALLAH THAT WHAT THEY DESIRED WAS TO DO GOOD AND MAKE PEACE BETWEEN PEOPLE.
63- ALLAH KNOWS WHAT IS IN THEIR HEARTS, TURN AWAY FROM THEM, ADVISE THEM, AND SPEAK TO THEM ELOQUENTLY ABOUT THEMSELVES.
64- EVERY MESSENGER WE SENT TO BE OBEYED WITH ALLAH’S PERMISSION. IF WHEN THEIR WRONGED THEIR OWN SOULS WENT TO YOU AND ASK ALLAH FOR FORGIVENESS, AND THE MESSENGER ASKED FOR THEIR FORGIVENESS, THEY WOULD HAVE FOUND ALLAH TO BE MOST FORGIVING AND MOST MERCIFUL.
65- BUT NO, BY YOUR LORD, THEY WILL NOT TRULY BELIEVE UNTIL THEY SEEK YOUR JUDGMENT IN THEIR DISPUTES, AND THEN HAVE NO UPSET IN THEIR HEARTS BECAUSE OF YOUR JUDGMENT, AND THEY SURRENDER TOTALLY.
Allah the Highest is addressing His command to the believers. The commands are:
1- To Obey Allah. The mark of true submission is the total obedience to Allah the Highest.
2- To Obey the messenger: Obeying Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him is a part of obeying Allah the Highest who said: “HE, WHO OBEYS THE MESSENGER, HE OBEYS ALLAH”. (S:4 A:80)
No one should say that they obey the Quran and not the Hadith, for Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him does not speak of his own accord. Those who say that they obey what is in the Quran only, then they may pray any number of Salah every day, as the number 5 Salah is not in the Quran. The number of Rakaa and the times and way of the Salah is not in the Quran either. Allah the Highest chooses to let us know about these and other things through His messenger, not in the Quran. Perhaps Allah the Highest choose to let us know about the most important duty in our faith through His messenger prayer and peace upon him to know the importance of the messenger’s guidance. Allah the Highest said: “WHATEVER THE MESSENGER BRINGS YOU, TAKE IT, AND WHATEVER HE FORBIDS YOU FROM DOING, BE FORBIDDEN”. (S: 59 A: 7)
3- To Obey those in charge: Division and fighting those in charge whether they are presidents or kings leads to weakening of the Muslim nation. Therefore, they should be obeyed as long as:
- They do not disobey Allah the Highest or command us to disobey Allah the Highest. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “O people, guard yourselves from Allah’s displeasure, and listen and obey your leader, even if whoever is in command is a disfigured black slave, as long as he upholds the book of Allah the Exalted and Majestic amongst you”. (B:Janaez;96 & T:Jihad;28 & N:Bayaa;26 & Ma:Jihad;39 & A:4;70)
- Not to obey those who command us to do wrong or disobey Allah the Highest. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Do not obey those of them (the leaders) who command you to do what involves disobeying Allah”. (Ma:Jihad;40 & A:3;67)
- It is the duty of the Muslim to correct the leader if the leader does wrong or goes astray of the Path of Islam. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “The greatest Jihad is a word of truth to an unjust leader”. (D:Malahem;17 & T:Fetan;13 & N:Bayaa;37 & Ma:Fetan;20 & A:3;19)
“IF YOU DISPUTE REGARDING A MATTER, REFER THIS MATTER TO ALLAH AND THE MESSENGER, IF YOU TRULY BELIEVE IN ALLAH AND THE LAST DAY; THIS IS BETTER FOR YOU AND MORE JUST”.
The reference between the Muslims if they dispute amongst themselves or with their leader are; Allah’s teachings in the Quran and the Messengers teachings in Hadith. These should always be the reference for the Muslims, in dispute and in agreement, for they are our laws. It is a mark of true and strong faith to refer every thing to our references, Allah the Highest and His messenger prayer and peace upon him. That is why Allah the Highest said: “BUT NO, BY YOUR LORD, THEY WILL NOT TRULY BELIEVE UNTIL THEY SEEK YOUR JUDGMENT IN THEIR DISPUTES, AND THEN HAVE NO UPSET IN THEIR HEARTS BECAUSE OF YOUR JUDGMENT, AND THEY SURRENDER TOTALLY”
This is the sign of total surrender to Allah the Highest.
There was an incident when a Muslim man, probably a hypocrite, had a dispute with a Jewish man. The Jewish man wanted to seek to judgment of Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him, knowing that he is just, while the other man wanted the judgment of a Jewish man called Kaab Ibn El-Ashraf. Eventually they went to Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him who ruled in favour of the Jewish man. The hypocrite was dissatisfied, and went to Abu Bakr who ruled the same. Dissatisfied still, he went to Omar Ibn El-Khatab. They told Omar that they have already been to see Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him then Abu Bakr. Omar asked them to wait; he went into his house, got his sword and killed the hypocrite.
In another incident; Al-Zobir Ibn El-Awam and another Muslim had a dispute involving watering land. The water belonged to Al-Zobir, but the other man claimed right to it. They went to Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him, who told Al-Zobir to water his land then let the man water his land from his water. The other Muslim man said that Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him ruled this way because Al-Zobir is his cousin.
These two incidents took place prior to the sending down of these Ayahs. Allah the Highest is telling us that the sign of strong faith and belief is to seek the Judgment of Allah and His messenger. Then whether their judgment is for us or against us, we should accept in our hearts and in our actions. This is the total surrender of the Muslim.
Now Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him is not with us in body, but his teachings are with us in the Hadith, and the Quran, Allah’s word is with us too. We should refer to them in all our actions in every day life. This is the complete faith.
