77- DID YOU SEE THOSE WHO WERE TOLD TO HOLD BACK FROM FIGHTING, BUT UPHOLD THE SALAH AND GIVE THE ZAKAH; BUT WHEN FIGHTING BECAME A DUTY UPON THEM, THEN SOME OF THEM FEAR PEOPLE AS MUCH AS THEY SHOULD FEAR ALLAH OR EVEN MORE, AND THEY WOULD SAY: “OUR LORD, WHY DID YOU MAKE FIGHTING A DUTY UPON US, WOULD YOU POSTPONE IT TO A LATER DATE?”.  SAY: “THE PLEASURES OF THIS LIFE ARE MINIMAL, BUT THE HEREAFTER IS BETTER FOR THE PIOUS, AND YOU WILL NEVER BE DEALT WITH UNJUSTLY IN THE LEAST”.

In the beginning of Islam, during the life of Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him, the Muslims were not permitted to fight the disbelievers.  They were commanded to worship Allah the Highest and to forgive the disbelievers.  Perhaps it was because they were too few and too weak to fight.

This went on during the time in Makah which was 13 years, then followed by the first two years in Medina.  Then Allah the Highest commanded them to fight the disbelievers back saying: “FIGHTING HAS BEEN MADE A DUTY UPON YOU WHILE YOU HATE IT.  MAY BE THAT YOU HATE SOMETHING WHILE IT IS GOOD FOR YOU, AND MAY BE THAT YOU HATE SOMETHING WHILE IT IS BAD FOR YOU, FOR ALLAH KNOWS AND YOU DO NOT KNOW”.  (S: 2 A: 216)

As it is with human nature, this command was hard, and they would have liked it to be postponed a little.  Particularly as the Muslims suffered a great deal in Makah for a long time and they felt safe and secure in Medina.

However, this is the way Allah the Highest chooses for the believers, and fighting in His cause is one of their duties and obligations.  Allah the Highest reminds us that whatever pleasures and comforts we may have in this life are minimal compared to those in the Hereafter.  And the way to them is through obeying Allah’s commands and gaining His Pleasure.  There are no short cuts.

This should be a reminder for us when we as Muslims are faced with choosing between upholding our religious principles and suffering some worldly losses.  For the true believers, obeying Allah the Highest comes first, and we should be sure that if we do, Allah the Highest will stand by us.

Unfortunately recently the Muslims cared more about their worldly pleasures and comforts than about Allah’s Pleasure.  It is not surprising that we are in this state we are in.
