83- AND IF THERE COMES TO THEM SOME NEWS CONCERNING SAFETY OR FEAR, THEY DIVULGE IT.  IT WOULD BE BETTER TO REFERRED IT TO THE MESSENGER AND TO THOSE IN COMMAND OF THEM, BECAUSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE THEY HAVE.  IF IT HAS NOT BEEN FOR THE BOUNTY OF ALLAH AND HIS MERCY, YOU HAVE FOLLOWED SATAN, EXCEPT FOR A FEW.

84- SO FIGHT IN THE CAUSE OF ALLAH, YOU DO NOT MAKE IT A DUTY UPON ANY PERSON BUT YOURSELF, AND ROUSE THE BELIEVERS TO FIGHT, ALLAH MIGHT THEN RESTRAIN THE DISBELIEVERS FORCE FROM YOU, AND ALLAH HAS GREATER MIGHT AND FIERCE PUNISHMENT.

Allah the Highest is rebuking the Muslims for panicking and speaking openly about any news or information concerning the safety and security of the Muslims.  This way they spread panic and fear among the Muslims.  What they should do is to discreetly refer the matter to Allah’s messenger prayer and peace about him and those in command; without spreading rumours or panic among the Muslims.  Those in command may verify

Allah the Highest commands the Muslims to verify and ascertain the truth about any information they receive.  Allah the Highest said: “YOU WHO BELIEVE, IF A WICKED PERSON COMES TO YOU WITH SOME INFORMATION, ASCERTAIN THE TRUTH LEST YOU MIGHT HARM SOME PEOPLE THROUGH IGNORANCE AND YOU WILL REGRET WHAT YOU DID”.  (S: 49 A: 6)

Guessing is not a reliable source of information either, and we are forbidden to accuse people of any thing because of guessing.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Never guess, for guessing is the worst lie”.  (B:Adab;57,58 & M:Ber;28 & T:Ber;56 & Malek:Khloq;15 & A:2;245)

Allah the Highest also commands us to fight, starting with commanding His messenger prayer and peace upon him, but also commanding him to rouse the believers to fight.  Each one will answer for himself at the end.  Allah the Highest said: “YOU WHO BELIEVE, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELVES, NO HARM COMES TO YOU FROM THOSE WHO GO ASTRAY IF YOU ARE RIGHTLY GUIDED, TO ALLAH YOU WILL ALL RETURN, AND HE WILL INFORM YOU OF WHAT YOU DID”.  (S: 5 A: 105)

Allah the Highest sometimes spares the Muslims the fight and its hardship.  This Happened in Little Badr; when the Muslims and disbelievers agreed after the battle of Badr to meet in the same time and place next year to fight again.  The Muslims went to Badr at the agreed time, but the disbelievers decided to turn back half way there.  The Muslims were prepared to fight as Allah the Highest commanded them, but they were spared the Fight.

Similar things happened in a number of occasions: 

-         Makah surrendered with very little skirmishes. 

-         When Medina was seized for a month, Allah the Highest sent a very strong wind on the disbeliever’s camp; which blow them away.

-         When Muslim army went to Tabouk to challenge the Roman Empire, the army camped there for a month, but the Roman army did not go out to fight them.

Allah the Highest is telling us that we should fear and spare ourselves His displeasure rather than fear the enemy.  Turning back when marching to fight the enemy and running away from the battle is one of the greatest sins for a Muslim to commit.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Avoid the seven worst sins” they said: “and what are they Allah’s messenger?”, he said:  “worshipping partners besides Allah, miserliness, killing the soul Allah made sacred except for a just cause, taking usury, taking the orphan’s money unjustly, turning away on the day of marching to fight, and speaking indecently of the virtuous, believing and unaware women”.  (N: Wasaya; 12)
