Nesae 97-100

97- THOSE THE ANGELS TAKE TO DIE, WHEN THEY WERE WRONGING THEIR OWN SOULS, THEY SAY TO THEM: “WHY DID YOU DO THAT?”, THEY SAID: “WE WERE WEAK AND OPPRESSED ON EARTH”, THEY (THE ANGELS) SAY: “WAS ALLAH’S EARTH NOT SPACIOUS ENOUGH TO MIGRATE THEREIN?”, THEIR ABODE IS THE HELL-FIRE, AND AN EVIL ABODE IT IS.

98- EXCEPT FOR THE WEAK OF THE MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN, WHO HAVE NO POWER, ABILITY OR MEANS.

99- THOSE, ALLAH MAY PARDON THEM, FOR ALLAH IS MOST CLEMENT AND MOST FORGIVING.

100- AND THOSE WHO MIGRATE IN THE CAUSE OF ALLAH, THEY WILL FIND THE EARTH TO BE SPACIOUS AND GIVES IN ABUNDANCE.  AND HE WHO LEAVES HIS HOME MIGRATING TO ALLAH AND HIS MESSENGER, THEN DEATH TAKES HIM HIS REWARD WILL BE WITH ALLAH, FOR ALLAH IS MOST FORGIVING AND MOST COMPASSIONATE.

Few Muslims did not want to migrate from Makah to Medina.  Some did not want to leave their property and wealth, and others did not want to leave their families, friends and the town then lived in all their lives.  By staying in Makah the majority of whom were not believers at the time, they were putting themselves at risk of being pressurized and being unable to worship and observe their religion.  They also put their wives and children at the risk of being tempted to disbelieve, or to live the way the disbelievers did.  If they die in this state, they would have wronged their own souls.

The angels will ask them why did they not migrate and leave where they are oppressed and vulnerable, therefore had to compromise their faith and their family’s faith?  There is plenty of space in Allah’s Earth and there are safe places for them to practice their faith freely.

Should they die in this state, they would have died wronging their own souls, for they did themselves and their families a great deal of harm.

Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “I have nothing to do with any Muslim living with the disbelievers”.  (T:Seyar;42)

Also Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Do not live among the disbelievers and do not sit with them; he who lives with them and sites with them he is like them”.  (T:Seyar;42 & D:Jihad;170)

There were some Muslims who did not migrate, and when the disbelievers were in military conflict with the Muslims, they had to hide their Islam.  This Happened in the battle of Badr, when Al-Abas Allah’s messenger’s paternal uncle, and his two nephews Oqil and Noufal ware taken prisoners of war.  When Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him saw them he said to his uncle: “Ransom yourself and your nephews”.  Al-Abas said: “Why, did we not pray with you to the same Qibla and testify the same testimony?”  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “But you stayed away from us and came into dispute with us”.  Then he recited these Ayahs to him.  Al-Abas then ransomed himself and his nephews”.  (Ibn Abi Hatem)

There are however weak men, women and children who can not get away in reality.  There were many examples of them.  Om Salama, whom Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him married her after the death of her husband, was held by her family in Makah.  Her husband and children migrated, but Om Salama’s family prevented her from joining them.  They let her go a year later when they felt sorry for the state she reached missing them.  Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him used to pray for them saying: “Allah I beg you to save the weak and oppressed of the believers”.  (B:Tafseer Sorah 4;21 & M:Masajed; 295 & D:Wetr;10)

However, for those who are strong and can leave the land of the disbelievers, there is no excuse.  This is for their own good and for the good of their families and children.

Allah the Highest promises those who leave their land for the cause of Allah and His messenger prayer and peace upon him, that they will find Allah’s Earth spacious.  They will find many places to welcome them and many ways to earn their living.  Allah the Highest will not let them down.

Some will leave their land, but never reach their destination.  Allah the Highest promises them a great reward from his bounty and according to His Generosity.

In our present day world migration for the Muslim may take place for a number of reasons and under different circumstances.  Migration has to be not just from one place to another, but from a situation and to another.  One might migrate from:

1-    From a land of disbelievers to Muslims land.

2-    Migrating from Muslims land where non Islamic practices prevail among the Muslims, to other where Islamic Practices prevail.  This may include doing sinful things like adultery, drinking intoxicants, gambling and usury.

3-    From land where Muslims are persecuted either by non-Muslims or Muslims, to land where they may be freer and safer.

4-    Migrating from land where the Muslim’s life, money and property are not safe to where they are safe.

On the other hand, one might migrate to:

1-    Non Muslim land to spread Allah’s word and faith.

2-    For Jihad.

3-    Seeking knowledge, particularly knowledge of Islam.

4-    Migrate to the borders of the Muslim land to protect it from the enemy.

5-    Migrate to where the Muslims are suffering to help and support them.

All of the above are forms of migration where the Muslim leaves his land where he normally lives to another, for varying reasons.  Such migration as long as it is in the cause of Allah; it will be most generously recompensed and rewarded by Allah the Highest.
