127- AND THEY ASK YOU FOR YOUR DECREE CONCERNING WOMEN, SAY: “ALLAH GIVE YOU HIS DECREE AND WHAT IS BEING RECITED TO YOU CONCERNING THE ORPHAN WOMEN WHOM YOU DO NOT GIVE WHAT ALLAH ORDAINED FOR THEM, AND YOU WISH TO MARRY, AS WELL AS THE WEAK AND MEEK OF THE CHILDREN, YOU ARE TO BE JUST TO THE ORPHANS AND WHATEVER GOOD YOU DO, ALLAH HAS FULL KNOWLEDGE OF”.
Taking care of orphan’s in one’s guardianship should be done for the sake of Allah the Highest only. Looking after an orphan is a great and noble undertaking, greatly rewarded by Allah the Highest, and should not be taken lightly or ruined. Allah the Highest is telling us in this Ayah about orphan girls in particular, and about dealing with what are entrusted with generally, particularly if there is little supervision over it except from Allah the Highest.
When a man has an orphan girl in his guardianship and who are not related to him in a way that he can not marry her, for example sister or niece. The man in question may have the girl’s money in his hands. If he was poor and looking after the orphan girl money provides him with employment and status, he might not wish to give it up. Satan might inspire them to do the following:
- Reject any marriage proposal for this girl, so that he remains benefiting from her money.
- Desire to marry the girl himself, which is alright and provided he will give her all her financial rights e.g. Dowry as well as her money.
- Desire to marry the girl himself but without giving her dowry or her money, this way saves him paying the dowry and gaining her money as well.
There is no prohibition against the girl’s guardian marrying her, but he should deal with her properly from the financial aspects, particularly her money which he was in charge of and paying her proper dowry.
In Islam, every woman has her financial independence; and her money is her own, and it can be taken from her when she give is happily with her own free well.
Looking after an orphan and his or her finances is a noble undertaking. It should be done for the pleasure of Allah the Highest and His reward only, not for financial gain. Allah the Highest does not give any reward to one who does the work which should be for the Hereafter, for the gain in this lower life. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Whoever does the work which should be for the Hereafter seeking the gain in this life, he will not have a share in the Hereafter”. (A: 5; 134 & D: Adab; 10)
It is a form of hypocrisy to pretend to do good while in the mean time do the exact opposite. It is a form of being double faced. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “He who has two faces in this life, will have two tongues of fire on the Day of Resurrection”. (D: Adab; 34 & Da: Reqaq; 51)
One should be fair in their financial dealings, and should make sure he is if entrusted with the wealth and affairs of a helpless orphan girl
